Hi guys, a few of you asked for the article from today, which, alas, is now unavailable online for some crazy reason. Here are a few stand-ins: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/michael-gerson-burke-and-paine-a-rivalry-that-still-reverberates/2014/02/10/1c5e6b5e-9276-11e3-b46a-5a3d0d2130da_story.html And another one: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/12/17/how-a-long-forgotten-debate-between-thomas-paine-and-edmund-burke-explains-american-politics/ And one more: http://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/burke-vs-paine-then-and-now/ Please do keep in mind, the above are opinionated articles about Burke and Paine's opinions...keep your critical thinking caps on tight!! Homework Mon. 2/23/15 - Work on WWA #2 (posted to the left). Homework due FRIDAY 2/13/15 - Please see attached (in the column to the left) for your first Weekly Writing Assignment. You will need to do the reading attached in order to do it. Homework - THE SAME THING EVERY DAY THIS WEEK! With a partner, rehearse your speech. NO looking at the text, just give a copy to someone else and let them give you a word or phrase if you get stuck. Do it as many times as you can, so that you have it down. Minimum 2x per night, and that's if you're close to 100% accuracy. At this point, you should know which words you are stressing, which gestures go with which lines, and when/how you are moving (if at all). Homework 1/21/15 - If you haven't already, write out your speech by hand. I know it is tedious but it *will* help your memory!! Homework 1/20/15 - Record your speech on your phone or other device. Listen to it, pausing occasionally to test whether or not you know the next line. Repeat, pausing for longer and more frequent intervals. Homework 1/13/15 - Bring your "chopped" speech tomorrow. It should be in strips of paper, one sentence per piece. Homework 1/8/15 - Remember, after you turn in the rough draft, to Tweet and to get your Self Eval ready for Monday. Next week: conferences! Homework 1/6/15 - Continue working on rough drafts. Remember: they are due by Friday, on my desk in the English Dept. Also: we will be doing grade conferences next week in combination with writing conferences, so you will need your self-evals done by Monday. Homework 1/5/15 - Using the Research Worksheet, log all of your sources and their main points. Following that, start writing your sub-points and figuring out how your research supports those points. Digital copy available to the left. *IF you have a system that you prefer, clear it with me first. Homework 12/17/14 - Spend 30 minutes researching & make sure to PRINT a few sources that you like. To save ink and paper, as well as increase readability, copy and paste just the text and the citation onto a word document and print that. Tweet tweet! Homework 12/15/14 - According to the feedback you got today during the workshop, rewrite your speech proposal. Due to me Weds. typed, double spaced and inspiring! Homework 12/11/14 - Complete your TYPED proposal. Due Monday. Approx. 1 paragraph (7-9 sentences). Don't go overboard. Or...underboard. Homework 12/10/14 - Listen to/watch two speeches off the "Great Speeches" Handout and complete the worksheet. If you lost/didn't get the handout it's posted to the left. Homework 12/8/14 - Finish up your film projects & reflection papers. Due Weds. Homework 12/2/14 - So much to do! Manage your time as needed depending on your schedule. By Friday, please turn in: - Director's Worksheet - Any rewrites remaining (if applicable) - Vocabulary story with words from current list & 11/17 list Also, keep in mind, we should be finished with the play this week. Homework 11/20/14 - Read Act IV & choose a character on which to focus. Translate his/her lines. Homework 11/19/14 - Tweet & work on film projects. Homework 11/18/14 - Read Act III sc. ii. Based on the activity we did in class today, choose ONE short speech and take notes in the text about its subtext. Then imagine how the subtext could be interpreted in another way, and note that as well. In class, we used the opening to Act III as an example, and played the scene in different ways. We tried casting the fairies as obedient and respectful and then as sassy and resentful. Then we cast Oberon and Puck at first as in cahoots and mischievous, then as worried and guilty. Homework 11/17/14: Read Act III sc. i and take notes for acting. That means you should note: what the characters are feeling, what they think about what the other characters are saying, where they are on stage in relation to other characters, what they do, what prop they might have. Homework 11/13/14 - Rewrite Act II sc. ii in EITHER a series of text messages or a series of Haiku. Due Monday. Homework 11/12/14 - Your speech "translations" are due Friday. Study for your quiz. You will need to know the basics about each character we've met so far (what does each character want and why can't she/she have it?) Also, make sure that you are on top of your film project stuff. By now you should: - Have a production manager organizing everyone - Have planned future rehearsal times, locations - Have a shared document that lists all of these details - Know the setting for your scene (Disco club? Elizabethan England? WWI foxhole? Treehouse?) Homework 11/10/14 - Following the handout, "translate" a modern speech into Shakespearian language. TRY to stay in iambic pentameter, but don't go too nuts. It's hard. Oh, and work on your film projects. You should be settled on future rehearsal dates, know your setting and some of what you'll need costume-wise. You should also have a sense of who is doing what in terms of filming, editing, etc. Homework 11/6/14 - Finish reading Act I sc. i and procure a copy of the text. In your film groups, at the VERY LEAST, get an email group/google doc set up and start planning to plan. Homework 11/5/14 - Quiz tomorrow, look over the "When in Doubt, it's From Shakespeare" chapter & your recent vocab. Also make sure your grammar muscles are flexed. Also on your radar: -Groups for the Shakespeare film project. I have one group's members so far, need to be 2-3 more groups. -Get a copy of the play Homework 11/3/14 - Write a composition using all the new vocabulary words. (Can be a creative piece or just a series of sentences, up to you). Also, please buy a copy of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" ASAP. You will need it by the end of next week. I'm using the "New Cambridge Shakespeare" version edited by R.A. Foakes, but you aren't required to get that one if you can't find it/don't want it/etc. Homework 10/31/14 - Papers! Papers! Paaaappppeeerrrrssss! Also, your self evaluations are due by 11/3. Also, please buy a copy of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" ASAP. You will need it by the end of next week. That means you are NOT writing definitions, you are either writing a creative piece that uses each of the 15 you chose OR choosing quotes/examples from literature. e.g. - "Homework is as annoying as a mosquito" might be your example of a simile. Or you could find one, and quote it, from TFA. Homework 10/7/14 - Paper paper paper! Your thesis workshop was GREAT today! Most of you are on the right track.
